Jon Huntsman: The hopeless candidate

I watched Republican Jon Huntsman approach the podium in Liberty State park in New Jersey, with family in tow to announce his candidacy for the republican nomination for president of the United States. With the Statue of Liberty at his back to give him a Reaganesque backdrop, I couldn’t help but think how clueless the republican party seems to be. The Republican Party doesn’t seem to understand that the America of today is different from the America of their youth. The America of today is more diverse, yet as I watched Huntsman and his entourage, I recalled Mitt Romney’s country club candidacy which like Huntsman seems to be talking to only one segment of America.

In his speech Governor Huntsman said what we need is “Leadership that knows we need more than hope, leadership that knows we nee answwers"

For myself and many Americans the answers that are constantly presented by Huntsman and his fellow republicans offer less than hope and are wrong for the America of today.

The republican answers are tax cuts for the wealthy, end Medicare, privatize social security, deny gay Americans equality, deny global warning, leave us with two unfunded wars, unnecessary war in Iraq, deregulation of banks, end collective bargaining rights, deny women’s right to choose, deny Muslims an opportunity to serve in the cabinet, conduct foolish congressional hearings on Muslims, hold assistance for tornado victims hostage to budget cuts. These are just some of the answers of Mr. Huntsman’s party and the ones he will have to give in order to win the nomination.

Yes Mr. Huntsman is a man who doesn’t offer hope and provides the wrong answers.
